All About the Haka!

All About the Haka!

Here in NZ, we do the haka. But what is the haka? This video will teach you all about what the haka is and why we do it!

A haka is a war dance. It started in 1888.

Sundown: The war dance scares the opponents. Nowadays the haka can be used to welcome people, ceremonies, and celebrations or to express thoughts and feelings.

The haka is a group of people standing in rows Moving in a sequence. The haka uses your whole body, mouth, and eyes. Maori chants and songs are used while moving. The songs tell stories and legends of Maori Culture.

The Ka Mate Haka is the most famous haka because it is performed by the All Blacks at every intentional rugby game. It was created by Te Raruparaha. The story is about his escape from death.

I want to learn the haka.

And that’s all about the haka!

Christmas Drawings!

 Christmas Drawings!

1. Elf on the Shelf

2. The Grinch

Room 11 made these drawings by following along with ArtForKidsHub on YouTube. We drew them with a pencil and then traced them with a sharpie. My favourite is the Elf on the Shelf because it is SO CUTE!!! I coloured mine with colour pencils, but some people coloured with markers.

Upcycling

 Upcycling

Ingredients

  • Empty recycled plastic bottle.

  • Acrylic paints (white, and 2 or 3 colors of your choice)

  • Paintbrushes

  • Box knife

  • Pencil

  • Vivid marker

  • Paper

Method

First, pick the recycled bottle that you want to make into a planter. Second, choose how you are going to cut it. Next, use a vivid marker to mark out where to cut the bottle. Then, cut the bottle using scissors or a box knife. Next, sandpaper the bottle to make the edges less sharp and so that the paint stays. After that, paint the bottle white and let it dry. On your piece of paper, draw your tessellation. A tessellation is a shape that fits together with another of itself. Then, apply a second coat of paint and let it dry. Draw your design on your bottle VERY LIGHTLY in pencil. Next, paint your design and let it dry. Then, paint the last coat. When the last coat dries, paint it over with PVA glue. Let it dry. Do a second coat of PVA glue.

I really liked the part when we planted the flowers.

Transformation on Scratch

 Transformation on Scratch

On Scratch, we made short videos about transformation. the four things of transformation are rotation, reflection, enlargement, and translation. Rotation is where you rotate, reflection is where you reflect, enlargement is where you get bigger and translation is where you move somewhere.

Kiwi Facts On Scratch

 Kiwi Facts On Scratch

On Scratch, room 11 made educational videos that had facts about New Zealand birds. This one was mine:

It took me a long time to do all the coding. It was really hard to do, so I can't really explain it. But I'll try.  First, I got the characters. Then, I customized them. Next, I picked the background I wanted. Then, I found the blocks I wanted and put them together! That's pretty much all that I can explain.

All about me!

 All about me!

All About Red Pandas. NOT regular pandas.

All about red pandas. NOT regular pandas.

Hello everybody! Today or you're all going to learn a lot about red pandas. They are super cute and I'm just going to put a picture of them down here: 🔽

Are red pandas REAL pandas?

Red pandas are related to the giant panda and are also related to the raccoon. That's where they get their stripes on their tail and face from. From the raccoon... not from the panda.

What do red pandas eat?

Red pandas are herbivores, but if red pandas are SUPER hungry, they will eat small animals.

Why are red pandas called Red pandas?

A red panda is also called a firefox, shining cat, cloud bear, or Himalayan raccoon.
I did some research, and I couldn't find ANY reasons why red pandas are called red pandas.

(Red pandas are so cute so I am just randomly going to put another picture of them right here. 🔽)

More Interesting Facts About Red Pandas

  1. Red pandas were first given the name RED PANDA about fifty years before the black and white kind.
  2. They are vegetarian carnivores
  3. They have a fake thumb (an extended wrist bone) which developed over time to help them climb trees and eat bamboo.

Room 11 Does Self-Portraits

 Room 11 Does Self-Portraits

Today Rm 11 finished up our self-portraits. This one is mine:

It took me a while to finish because my Chromebook was playing up, but I finally did it! The way I made it was I used the curve tool on google draw and traced lines and stuff on a picture of me. Then I deleted the background picture and then I used the paint bucket to color it. After that, I used the curve to draw some cool background shapes. Then I colored them in, and put in a background color.
